The weather remained typically Welsh, with strong winds and rain, so after doing some shopping in the morning we headed north to visit an indoor attraction, vis the National Slate Museum in Llanberis and the adjacent Dolbadarn Castle.
Dolbadarn was actually the main reason that we had chosen this area of Wales after Dad saw it appear on his work computer screen saver!
The drive up via Pen-y-Pass was spectacular and Dad had to concentrate hard to keep his eyes on the road and not look at the scenery.
There is not much of the castle left, but it is in a very picturesque spot – provided that you don’t look in the direction of the Dinorwig hydroelectric power station – and also free to enter (although the car park costs £6).
We then walked a short distance to the Slate Museum which, amazingly, was also free. Sadly, we arrived a bit late and only managed to see about half of it properly before it closed. Dad was particularly taken by the huge waterwheel and also the 1969 slate worker’s cottage which contained so many domestic elements which he remembered from growing up in that period.
