A long drive to our cottage near Porthmadog. We chose to take the M4 over the Severn crossing and then drive up through the middle of Wales as this looked like a more scenic route than using the M5 and was predicted to only take about another 15 minutes.
Following a sign indicating services at lunchtime we ended up in Usk and after driving round in circles ended up in the car park of their Rural Life museum. We used their cafe for a tea and most acceptable cake and then, discovering that it was free, had a quick look round the museum.
It was excellent and we feel able to highly recommend it. The museum was large and crammed with exhibits which were never-the-less well displayed. Dad was of course particularly taken with the tractors and model railway whilst Mum and Sophia admired the brightly painted horse drawn wagons.
We didn’t have time to do the museum full justice so we must make sure that we visit next time we are in that part of Wales.
Driving further the scenery was spectacular, but the weather got steadily worse. As we approached the cottage, Gary the Garmin did one of his common tricks and took us down several miles of very steep and narrow single track road leading across the hills. Fortunately it remained passable and finally emerged about half a mile from the cottage.
