No-one was around when I got up so I wondered into the kitchen and made my own breakfast. A guide turned up a bit later and provided some eggs and meatballs to as well.
I liaised with Timo regarding the schedule for the week. We agreed that I would go to Kylkeinen first, then Jänisvaara and then back to the kennels for one night before being driven over to Saija to spend two nights there with a final night back at the kennels.
I packed up my remaining items and got ready to leave. Timo added Clyde to the team so I was back with six dogs although with a heavier sledge.
There were no other guests so I was free to leave when I wanted and I got away at about 11:30 with a very fast start. It was significantly colder than yesterday with about -10°C when I started and this better temperature for the dogs combined with a recently frozen surface caused the team to go really quickly. I headed for the training loops north of the main trail, but even on these easy trails it was hard to control the sledge and I had to use a lot of brake.
I made my way to Tilsa and on the way explored a road near the canyon trail which a didn’t recall driving before. It ran for several km with a good surface but simply ended with a lorry turning area.
After lunch I took the route south of Ramevaara and then a circuitous route to Kylkeinen arriving at about 15:30.
Overall, my impression was of a very fast day which is perhaps reflected in the high average speed. The surface had frozen harder since yesterday and in places, particularly the Kylkeinen lake, was practically ice. The dogs didn’t seem to tire and even after more than 30km were still pulling as strongly as they had in the morning.
The kennels delivered a hot meal to me and after feeding the dogs I settled down for the evening.
