Spain 2025 – Day 2

Our second day in Toledo started with a visit to the Cathedral. This is huge and took some time to see. As we had got up rather late this meant a very late lunch.

As with most Catholic churches, the decoration seemed rather over elaborate in places, but there were still many fine things to see and of course so shortage of El Grecos.

  • Large puppets of unknown purpose

The highlight of the cathedral had to be the misericords. I have never seen such a large and imaginative set of carvings. They were worth the entrance fee on their own and I could have spent all day admiring them.

After lunch we tried a change of religion and went to see the Santa Maria La Blanca synagogue. This was actually rather disappointing being an almost completely empty building with some modestly interesting decorations.

Finally, as it wasn’t very far away we opted for the El Greco museum. This was modestly priced (as all Toledo museums seem to be) and the master’s complete set of apostles was certainly worth a look.

There were also some related works such as copies of El Greco and painting which had been inspired by his style.

Again, not perhaps quite as interesting as we had anticipated, but worth the entrance fee.

We decided to return along the river as we anticipated (correctly) that this would take us back to the point we had visited yesterday. The river is indeed spectacular where it passes through the gorge, but the elevated path is narrow and unfortunately also designated as a cycle track!
